September - Tim Holtz 12 Tags of 2016

I've been wanting to try Tim's Sept tag techniques all month -  and I finally got into my craft room last night to get at it before the month ended and it was too late!
and here's my version of Tim's Tag.
First I created a paint patina background on the manila tag according to Tim's tutorial.  I used Distress Inks in Antiqued Bronze, Cracked Pistachio, Weathered Wood , Mustard Seed and Fired Brick.
I spritzed the paints with water and dragged 3 tags through the mix - so I'll have two to use later!
Then I sponged Ranger Distress Hickory Smoke all over each tag and flicked with water.
Next I took a piece from Alpha Parts Framed and colored it with Cracked Pistachio, Fired Brick and then Antiqued Bronze according to Tim's tutorial
Then I moved onto the Alcohol Ink resist part.  I rubbed Adirondack Alcohol Inks in Black Soot an Mushroom over panels of Yupo Paper.
I inked up some stamps from Tim's Mini Halloween set using Archival Jet Black and WV Archival Watering Can stamped them over the Yupo and rubbed immediately over the stamped images with a soft cloth to create the resist effect (at this point I got so involved in creating this cool panel I forgot to take photos!)  Then I laid Tim's Burlap stencil over the panel and pounced over it with Alcohol Blending solution - I had the sponge a little too wet so basically it just 'melted' the black it - but it gave a cool look anyway!
Then I added some Remnant Rubs Curiosities, some Small Talk Occasions, and Ephemera/Frightful.  I layered the Yupo panel to a slightly larger black panel and then stapled it to the tag base.  I dropped some Black Soot Alcohol ink onto three Heirloom Roses - dried them with my heat tool and glued them to my tag.
I'll definitely be trying this super cool Alcohol Resist technique again!  LOVE the shadowy look it creates!
You'll find lots of inspiration from others who have  linked up over at Tim's blog here.
I'm also linking my tag to the following:

Tim Holtz August Tag

I can't believe I've missed making both the June and July tags -  I didn't want to miss the August one -  and finally sat down at my craft table tonight after work to get it done - one day shy of the deadline!
Here is Tim's tag and you can see all his instructions here.
I am getting into full Halloween mode already - I just got Tim's new Lost Zombie die -  so he is featured, front and (off) center!
I followed Tim's instructions for my stained background - using a mini brayer and Carved Pumpkin Distress Spray Stain.  I sponged the edges with Distress Ground Espresso Ink.  I used the Honeycomb die with pieces of Paper Stash/Regions Beyond and adhered it to the side of the tag.
I added Remnant Rubs - Curiosities and Small Talk/Occasion stickers.  I messy stitched a few lengths on the left side.  I cut the Lost Zombie out of black card, rubbed some Distress Picket Fence Paint over him and adhered him to the tag with foam dots.  I rubbed Picket Fence paint on the Haunt charm from Adornments/Oddities, added a Jump Ring and looped it through a Wire Pin.  I pinned it to a piece of Linen Ribbon that I looped through the hole on the tag.
I slipped a Drive In Theater ticket into one hand of Lost Zombie and a Jack O'Lantern in the other - both from Ephemera/Frightful.  To finish off my tag - I added 3 black enamel dots and then splattered watered down black acrylic paint over the tag using a toothbrush.
If you, like me,  wanted to make Tim's August tag - you still have one day to get it done!

Tim Holtz 12 Tags of 2016 - May

I'm just squeaking in before the deadline for Tim's May 12 tags of 2016.  I missed last month and didn't want to miss it again.
So here is Tim's tag and you'll find all his instructions here.
And here is my version.  I first adhered a couple of strips of Tissue Tape - Symphony and Commute and then stamped images from Tim's Dapper set using Archival Jet Black Ink.  I then applied WV White Embossing Paste through Tim's Gears Mini Stencil and let it dry.  Then I sprayed Ranger Distress Peeled Paint and Broken China Spray Stains onto the tag.  I wiped off the excess and you can see how the Paste and the Tissue Tape resisted the stain.
Instead of making tattered florals -  because of the masculine theme and the gears stencil that I used -  I made tattered gears!  I die cut Tim's Thinlits Gearhead dies out of Paperstash/Crowded Attic.  Then I lightly sprayed the pieces with Peeled Paint and Broken China Distress Spray Stains.  Then I splattered some Antiqued Bronze Distress Stain on to them (the pump on the bronze stain got clogged so I had to dip a brush into it and splatter instead of spraying).  Then I layered different gear sizes together and attached them with a Mini Fastener/Screwdriver slot brad.  I scrunched up the top layers so they were like gear flowers (!)
I colored a piece of Natural Linen Ribbon from Funkie Junkie with the same Distress Spray Stains and sewed it to the tag.  I added a Vial Label with Remnant Rubs/Life Quotes.
Here's a close up of one of the gear "flowers' so you can see how it's scrunched up
So I'm happy to have been able to get my May Tag done -
and I'm pleased with how it came out - Win -Win!! (I love when that happens!)

Tim Holtz Feb 2016 Tag

Well, more than half of this short month of February is past - so I thought I'd better get shaking on making my Feb Tim's Tag!  I love both of the techniques he has reintroduced - Monoprint from his June 2014 tag and Embossed Texture Paste from his March 2015 tag.
See his instructions here and this is a photo of Tim's Tag.
Since Valentine's day is long gone  - I decided to use an Easter theme for my tag.  For the monoprint background - I first sprayed my tag with Antique Linen Spray Stain and water - then dried it with my heat tool.
I used the Blossom Stencil with Mowed Lawn, Salty Ocean and Shabby Shutters Distress inks rubbed on the back of the stencil - spritzed with water - then pressed onto the tag.  I used the same Blossom stencil for the Embossed Texture Paste technique using Wendy Vecchi White Embossing Paste and Ranger Gold Embossing Powder.  I rubbed a little Frayed Burlap Ink through the Burlap Stencil along the left side of my tag. I thought it might give the illusion of a woven basket.
For my bunny, I used Tim's Rust Effect Technique (found on page 44 of Vol III Compendium of Curiosities) I took a piece of mat board and  covered it with Cracked Pistachio and Weathered Wood Distress Paints, dried it with my heat tool, then rubbed Antiqued Bronze Distress paint to cover the panel - immediately spritzing it with water and then pressing a paper towel over it and removing it quickly.  I die cut the bunny and bow from Movers and Shapers Mini Bunny and Bow.  For the eggs, I used the Sized Ovals - Medium and Small dies cutting them out of mat board.  I rubbed Salty Ocean on the small one and Mowed Lawn on the medium one - flicking water on them to create water spots and drying with my heat tool.  I sponged the edges of the eggs with Distress Ground Espresso ink.
For a little dimensional decoration - I die cut 3 small butterflies (Movers and Shapers Small - heart, butterfly and star) out of the same colored mat board I used for the bunny, folded their wings up gently and adhered them just along the middle body to my tag.
I added some Small Talk/Occasion stickers that I cut and sanded as well as a Vial Label with a Bontanical Remnant rub on it.  I colored the Crinkle Ribbon with Salty Ocean and Mowed Lawn inks spritzed with water.
I had so much fun playing with these techniques on my bunny tag.  What a great idea Tim had to revisit and revise techniques from past tags for 2016!

12 Tags of 2016 - January

Tim Holtz has started his 12 tags of 2016 with a twist this year - he's looking at prior years tags and combining techniques from different years to create a new tag - perhaps using the techniques slightly differently - a great way for us to re-visit lots of fun techniques.
So here is Tim's tag and a link to his instructions for January.
And here is my version of Tim's tag -  I went with a Valentine theme - using Tim's Valentine Background Texture Fade on a piece of Foil Tape Sheet.  I rubbed Black Soot and Fired Brick Distress Paints over it - then wiped over it with a paper towel to remove the paint from the raised letters -  Tim's Industrious Metal technique (from his January 2014 tag).
Here's a close up of the Industrious Metal piece.
I used the Iced Coffee Stamp from the special release Simon Says set - white embossing it 3 times on black cardstock - cutting out the cup from one stamping and the lid and straw from another stamping and layering them for 3D effect.
I went over the embossings with a piece of white chalk - then rubbed it with my finger - Tim's Chalkboard Technique (from his November 2013 tag).  I tore the top and bottom edges and layered it over the embossed foil piece which I had adhered to a manila tag.  I cut the little heart out of matboard using a Movers and Shapers Small heart die.  I inked the heart with Wendy Vecchi Archival Tree Branch ink then embossed it with Wendy Vecchi Geranium Embossing Powder.  I popped it up on the cup with a foam dot.
I added the happy valentine's day  Small Talk Occasions sticker at the bottom.
I looped a piece of Trimmings/Red Cream through the top to finish it off!
You'll find lots of creative versions of the January tag over on Tim Holtz blog here
