Celebrating Hanukkah

Today I'm wishing all those who celebrate - a most happy first night of the 8 days of Hanukkah!
I work for 3 surgeons who celebrate  - so every year I make each of them a gift basket of some sort.  Here is what I filled their baskets with this year.
I'm always on the lookout for blue containers to put their treats in.  I found these lovely baskets this past summer at The Christmas Tree Shop.  I always make the sweet little Pecan Rum Cakes for them -  their families tell me how much they love them every year!  I also made some homemade fudge and Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans (see the recipe for the coffee beans on this post)
I made the tags using a Waltzingmouse tag die,  the silver star around the hole at the top of the die is from another Waltzingmouse tag die, a sentiment strip die from MFT, and the Star of David die is from PTI.  The little star and dreidle stamps are from Casual Fridays Stamps.
I found this Hanukkah information on the Web

Hanukkah Traditions

Hanukkah is the story of a great victory of the Jews over the Syrian-Greeks. In 165 BCE, led by the Hasmonean family of Mattathias the High Priest and his youngest son, Judah, the Jews succeeded in evicting the Syrian-Greeks from Israel and restored the Temple.

According to the Talmud, after the Temple had been cleaned and the Priests were ready to light the Temple menorah, they could find only one jug of oil that was fit to use. This was only enough for one day, but it lasted for eight. This is why Hanukkah is eight days long. For eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth day of the month of Kislev we light the menorah to celebrate the victory and the miracle of Hanukkah.

Hanukkah comes from the Hebrew word "Khanu" meaning 'and they rested,' and from the Hebrew date Kaf Hey which equals 25. That is why we celebrate Hanukkah beginning on the 25th of the month of Kislev.

You will find other Hanukkah projects I've posted over the years here.

In case you are interested - here is the recipe for the Pecan Rum Cakes - I found it in a magazine many years ago!  They are SO easy to make - and SO delicious!  (they taste best if heated a bit in the microwave before eating!)

Bert's Rum Cake
Makes 1 large bundt cake or 12 Bundtlette cakes
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 box yellow cake mix
1 box (3.4 oz) vanilla instant pudding mix
1/2 cup light rum
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup water
4 eggs
GLAZE
1 cup sugar
1 stick unsalted butter
1/4 cup light rum
1/4 cup water
Preheat oven to 350.  Spray a 12 cup bundt pan or 2 - six bundtlette pans with cooking oil spray with flour.  Sprinkle chopped pecans over bottom.  Stir cake mix and pudding together in large mixing bowl.  Add rum,  water, oil and eggs.  Beat for 2 minutes with an electric mixer.  Pour cake batter over nuts and bake for 45-50 minutes.  If you are making the smaller cakes, spoon batter evenly into each mold (about 2/3 cup each) and bake for 20 minutes.
5 minutes before cake is done, prepare the glaze.  Place sugar, butter, 1/4 cup rum and 1/4 cup water in a saucepan and boil for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove cake(s) from oven and slowly drizzle the glaze over the top while cake is still hot.  It will take several applications to use all the glaze.  Cool cake in pan for 30 minutes before unmolding.  Finish cooling on a wire rack.

A Stenciled Birthday with Heart!

I have another bright and colorful stenciled card to share today. (see my previously posted card here).
I, once again, used 3 brandy new stencils by Dina Wakley - this time I used Tracks (for the background), The Basics (for the heart and sun), and Moon Faces - using Ranger Distress Tumbled Glass, Fired Brick and Mustard Seed and Archival Jet Black inks.  I stamped the sentiment from Woot Woot by Cas-ual Fridays Stamps on a white scrap and punched it with the Word Window punch from SU.  I layered the white stenciled panel to a slightly larger black panel - and layered that to my Summer Sunrise card base.  I love how bright, bold and artsy this looks!

I'm linking my card to this month's Cas-ual Friday challenge - Summer Lovin' - to use hearts in summer colors. My blue and yellow are obviously summer colors - and hopefully the red heart can be considered red hot like the sun at the beach!

I hope you'll stop by tomorrow when I'll have a Mixed Media project as a member of the Design Team for the very first Monthly Mixed Media Card Challenge!

Purple Watercolor Sympathy

I had such a busy week last week -  I spent Wed and Thurs at my nieces' house babysitting for my grandnephew and grandniece, Landon 3 1/2 yrs and Mila 1 3/4 yrs.  Mum and Dad drove to Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD to celebrate their 5th year anniversary - so I volunteered to help for 2 of the 4 days they were away.  I had a marvelous time but was dead exhausted and I took Friday off from work as well to recuperate!  I also missed out on several days of stamping!
So here I am -  catching up with a card for three challenges.
I watercolored my background by coloring over an acrylic block with 3 shades of purple Ranger Distress Markers - spritzed the block with water - then pressed it against a die cut panel of watercolor cardstock.  After drying it with my heat gun,  I used the darkest Distress Marker to color the leaf stem stamp - spritzed it with water and stamped it on the panel over the watercolored background.  I dried it again with my heat gun and then stamped the sentiment along the bottom.  I used a stitched mat rectangle die from Lil' Inker Designs to cut the panel and layered it to a white cardstock base.  The stamps are from the Casual Comfort Set by Cas-ual Fridays Stamps - I won the set with my card submitted to last months Cas-ual Friday's challenge!
I'm entering this into the following challenges:
The Card Concept 9 -  Monochromatic Purple - I used clean and simple style
Keep It Simple - Watercolor
Virginia's View Challenge #3 -  Use something stitched (or faux) on your card (the stitched mat die)

and here are a few pictures of my little darlings

Fusion Card Challenge - April 24th

I'm so excited - it's Thursday and time for a new Fusion Challenge!  I am in awe of how many of you participate in the challenges every other week -  I get such inspiration from everyone's take on it!  So here we are with a brand new challenge!  How bright and colorful is this?!
I just had to go literal with my card - since I purchased SO many of these colored straws from Michaels  after seeing Kelly's post of her picture ornaments here. (at $1 a pack, how could I leave them there??!  I haven't made the ornaments - yet....but I have all my supplies ready for when the spirit moves me!)  I used the Stripes Horizontal Cover Plate from PTI for the panel and cut the straws to fit inside each cut out accept for one - where I popped up the cut out piece stamped with the sentiment from Woot Woot by Cas-ual Friday Stamps.
I popped up the die cut panel with lots of foam tape and adhered the straws with ScorTape to be sure they'd stay stuck! You can see the raised panel and dimension the straws give the card from this side angle.  I refrained from adding any sequins or enamel dots - as I think this would be great as a guy card.
How are you inspired by this week's Fusion Challenge?  I can't wait to see your cards linked up in the Fusion Gallery!
I hope you will check out all of the DT's blogs linked below for some serious inspiration!

Get Your Party On - In Blue!

I've got a birthday card - in blue - to share today - made for two different Cas-ual Fridays Challenges. The stamps are from the set Woot Woot.  I used three different textured blue cardstocks for the fun heart balloons from MFT.  I tied them with twine that hangs loose.  The balloons are up on foam dots.

Sketch it with Eight

After working on a flurry of Design Team creations last week - I'm finally able to do some 'just because I want to' stamping for a couple of my favorite challenges! I make Hanukkah cards for the doctors I work for each year and this set called 8 Happy Nights by Cas-ual Fridays Stamps is just perfect for this holiday!
Cas-ual Fridays challenge - Create with 8
and just for good measure - here's another card I made using the same stamp set - I drew a frame around the edge using a silver pen.
Well - I have to go check the pumpkin pie I'm baking for Thanksgiving -  we're all snuggled down in our house tonight - the wind is howling and it's about 22 degrees F.   We MAY get a little snow Wednesday night - hopefully nothing that will interfere with us driving to my sister's house on Thursday (1 hour away) for Thanksgiving dinner!

Three for World Card Making Day

Today is World Card Making Day so I just had to make some cards to celebrate!
I've got 3 creations to share - each made for a different blog challenge.
My first card was inspired by the Cas-ual Friday's challenge - Sequins & Chevrons
The Chevrons were made with a die from MFT, I used a stitched mat die from Lil' Inker Designs for the top panel.  The sentiment is from Cas-ual Fridays Woot Woot set.  I used some flower sequins for the bling.

My next card was made using this weeks Freshly Made Sketch
and also the Waltzingmouse Fanatics challenge - theme: Halloween

I die cut a circle out of the blue Coredinations panel, layering it over a yellow panel stamped with this wonderful Vintage Witch from Waltzingmouse.  I sponged the yellow circle with Scattered Straw Distress Ink.  I stamped the sentiment on vellum and adhered it over the center of the circle cut out.  I added 3 enamel dots to the top corner.  The blue panel is layered over a white card base using form dots.
And my final card for this momentous day was made using the Cas(e) this Sketch
I made a Thanksgiving card using these lovely stitched leaf dies from Lawn Fawn that I recently added to my die collection (!)  I popped up the leaves on foam dots and added a few flower sequins for a little shimmer since I had them out on my work table for my first card!  The sentiment is from Lil' Inker Designs.
Phew!  after not stamping since last weekend - I really got to work last night to get these done for today!  It felt good to get my hands inky again!

Happy Red White and Blue

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to all my blogging friends in the US -  I would like to take a moment to thank all the ladies and men who have or who are presently serving in the military services - my son, Josh, included who served in the US Army right out of High School.   He's been out for about 12 years now but  here he is when he was stationed in South Korea for a year right out of boot camp.

So - on to my card for today -  which I made for 3 challenges out here in blog land:
I used this weeks Cas(e) this Sketch.
The Free 4 All challenge on Split Coast was to 'Repeat' something on your card at least twice
Cas-ual Fridays challenge is to use Red, White and Blue (my circles and Birthday are blue ink in case you can't detect that in the pic!)

I stamped the line circles stamp, masked the top half and sponged the red on the bottom.

I took today off to get my car serviced and inspected, go to a doctor's appt, and plant flowers at my parents and grandparents graves for Memorial Day - so I have a 4 day weekend (although rain is predicted for all of it here in MA!!)

Thanks so much for stopping by today!

Stamps:  Happy and Birthday from Paper Smooches/Birthday Buddies, circle/line from Cas-ual Fridays Stamps/Woot Woot.
Paper:  White - PTI
Ink:  Memento Nautical Blue and Lady Bug, Ranger Distress Barn Door.

Yeah Baby!

I was inspired to make this card by two challenges.    My colors were inspired by the Runway Inspired Challenge - the white and blue in the dress - and the shadowy grey background

My theme was inspired by Cas-ual Fridays challenge - Round of Applause - CAS cards that celebrate an accomplishment and feature at least one circle.

My stamps are from the set Woot Woot by Cas-ual Fridays Stamps.  I stamped a piece of the line with circles stamp on a 3"x3" white panel coloring in the rims of the circles with a blue Copic and adding the celebratory "Yeah Baby!" above it.  I layered the white panel to the gray Bazzill card with foam tape.

Although this card could be for celebrating all kinds of accomplishments with the sentiment on the front -  mine will be a birthday card based on what I stamped inside!  Stamps here also from the Woot Woot set.
Stamps:  Woot Woot - Cas-ual Friday's Stamps
Paper:  white - PTI, grey Bazzill
Ink::  Versafine Onyx Black
Accessories:  Copic - B24, foam tape.

A Chalkboard Birthday!

I was SO excited to see the Chalkboard Technique as the Technique Lovers challenge over on Split Coast this week.   I've had this tutorial by Betsy Veldman printed out on my desk for a while now.

So Joan's challenge made me finally sit down and try to do it!  You'll find all kinds of chalkboard cards in the SCS challenge gallery here.

If you look at Betsy's birthday sample - you'll see I pretty much copied it!! Using stamps that I had from Cas-ual Fridays Stamps and Taylored Expressions - I created this chalkboard card (well it's actually a 3"x4" tag type creation - it doesn't open)
What you see here is my third try at it - the first one wasn't spaced well and the 2nd one I tried over stamping the white embossing with Fresh Snow ink and I WAY OVER over stamped it! So - it's a process that I think you get better at the more you do it!

First I stamped the sentiments with Versamark and embossed them in white. Then I stamped the banner over the HAPPY BIRTHDAY using Fresh Snow - I didn't get it quite centered over the sentiment so I added the pink heart gems to off set it!  I cut off the side edges up to and around the banner ends so they stick out.  Next I drew the framing lines with a white Prismacolor watercolor pencil and drew some red lines around NOISE and yeah BABY. I rubbed a little bit of Fresh Snow Ink around the edges and open spaces and finally added the ribbon and buttons with twine.

Pretty cool huh??!!

Stamps: Banner and Happy Birthday from It's a Banner Day 1 - Taylored Expression, all other sentiments from Woot Woot by Cas-ual Fridays Stamps
Paper: True Black, Hibiscus Burst, Hawaiian Shores - PTI
Ink: Versamark, Fresh Snow - PTI
Accessories: caribbean  and; pink sorbet twine - The Twinery, buttons - PTI, ribbon - PTI, glue dots, heart gems - Amuse, white and red Prismacolor watercolor pencils, white embossing powder, hot gun
